PostSubject: Looking for a solid tactical folder (pocket knife in laymans terms)   Sun Jun 20, 2010 1:44 am

Hey guys. I'm on vacation right now, back home to my roots in Tennessee. In a few days I'm gonna be heading to Gatlinburg. On the outskirts of I wanna say Greenville headed toward Pigeon Forge there's an HUGE knife store called the Smokey Mountain Knife Works. Three stories of everything from Swiss Army to Gerber, Ka-Bar to SOG, S&W to Columbia River. They got every kind of cutter from, I shit you not, about 2 inch folders to 6 foot swords. So... I'm in the market for a new EDC knife. My current one was obtained from a Mr. Mohammed in Gatlinburg two years ago. Still does its job, but you can tell it's been through hell. Not to mention the screw that holds the spring comes lose and it flys open from time to time. I'm looking for something reliable and sturdy that can take a good beating. Military grade is definitely a plus. Any suggestions?

I've heard a lot of good things about spyderco. Not a big fan of the gigantic hole they usually entail, but I've heard they're extremely reliable. Do you know what model you own?

Good call sir. I found a few I like on their website. I'm assuming with a 3 story storefront they'll have Boker knives instock. I'm still gonna look around for a few others though. Thanks for the heads up on that.

unfortunately our great TSA took it from me because I had forgot it in my carry on bag once.

I made it to ecuador last year with a automatic knife on my carry on...(guess it was in the metal casing not extended so they could not see it) so go figure our great TSA.
i didnt even know I had it until i landed lol.

Lol. Wow. Shows you how terrible they can be at catching stuff. I wonder if you could still get away with it now since they apparently "upped" security measures. ...and if you can, teach me how. Haha

So they didn't see it on the scanner just cause it was enclosed in a metal handle? scratch

I must say, both are quite nice.

it does not have the "knife" profile when retracted to a person operating an x-ray machine. they should have caught it but they didn't due to their minimal training. im not saying this as a regular joe either. my specialty post military is physical and operational security including the use of x-ray scanners. i did what we call a surprise check on a government building that a company I worked for was contracted to protect. I was able to get in Semtex, a knife like shar's, and a Garrote past the x-ray scanners and they were manned by FPS Officers. all be it that the exercise was overseen by US Marshals and that they couldn't interfere with the operation.
