PostSubject: how to set an ambush   Wed Jun 30, 2010 6:58 am

ok gents, I do not profes to be an expert at all tactics or a master at all things military. the one thing I can teach extremely well and wish to impart on those that I play with is one of the most important tactics in warfare, the ambush. an ambush is usually carried out by at least a platoon size unit , however it can and many times has been done successfully in the squad and fire team levels. to properly set an ambush there are three factors: terrain, size/ armament , and formation.

the first factor is terrain. you must select an area where you and your team have cover and concealment. in addition, having an elevated position to fight from is highly desirable.

the next is size/ armament . do not attempt to ambush a platoon size unit with a fire team. for those that are unaware of what each unit entails here is a break down. a fire team generally consists of 5-6 men, a squad consists of 2 fire teams, and a platoon consists of 4 squads. although you do have the element of surprise on your side do not attempt to ambush anything more than twice your units size. you should also never try and engage a unit with far superior armament ie infantry ambushing vehicles with heavy armor without anti-armor weapons. dont bring a knife to a gun fight would be the best description of this.

the last factor is formation. this is partially determined by the size of your unit, the size of the enemy unit, and the terrain that you have chosen. there three basic formations, V formation, L formation, and the linear or side formation.

V formation: the enemy enters the kill zone from the wide part and is then ambushed. it is characterized by multiple interlocking fields of fire. the trigger for this formation is when the enemy is at least 3/4 of the way in. the advantage to this is that once in the kill zone it is almost impossible for the enemy to escape if the ambush was properly planned.

L formation: the enemy would enter from the open side of the formation which consists of a long area of fire and a smaller team providing flanking fire. . a rear security element is required to cut off any escaping enemy.

the last formation is the linear or side formation. this is the least advisable formation to use and is usually used for a rush ambush such as hearing an enemy patrol coming and getting in the bushes to the side of the road quickly.it is characterized by all shooters being equal distance to the targets.

use this knowledge wisely, ask questions, and give feedback.

AMBUSHES….

The ambush is very important and is
effective, and more frequently used in Jungle or Woodland
airsoft fighting than in any other type of airsoft combat.
Thick landscape provides many opportunities
for a well-concealed force to gain surprise.

Surprise is vital for a successful ambush.
Destruction of enemy forces is the
primary purpose of most ambushes, but other
benefits result from a well-executed ambush
program.

These benefits include:

Disruption of enemy operations,
since troops become reluctant to move
and fight in areas where ambushes are
frequent.

Capture of prisoners and equipment which may
yield intelligence data.

Capture of supplies, thus
increasing combat effectiveness at the
expense of the enemy. In some
instances, this is the primary source of
supplies for airsoft guerrilla forces.
More than in any other type of terrain,
Jungle or Woodland ambushes require high standards of
discipline. Soldiers on an ambush must be
prepared to remain in the same position for
minutes at a time, without being able to
talk, or smoke. They must endure insects and
resist the desire to make any quick moves to
swat or brush the insects away. All these
require extensive training to develop the
patience and self-discipline required.
The location for an ambush should be
chosen after a careful analysis of the terrain,
using maps, aerial photographs, and
personal reconnaissance. The site chosen
must contribute to the surprise of the
ambush. Many times the selection of a site for
surprise alone will be more effective than
attempting to ambush from a site which is in
other respects tactically sound but at which
the enemy is sure to be suspicious. Covered
routes of approach and withdrawal, good
fields of fire, and canalization of the enemy
are characteristics of a good site. The site
should always be reconnoitered and
approached from the rear.
In no other operation is camouflage more
important than in the ambush. Weapons
should fire through screens of undisturbed,
living foliage. Spoilage resulting from the
preparation of positions must be removed
from sight. There can be no unnecessary
noise or movement. If reliefs are used, they
should be scheduled so that only a few men
move at any one time. One or two men
moving are harder to detect than an entire
relief moving at once.
