How to charge a battery Empty
PostSubject: How to charge a battery   How to charge a battery EmptyTue May 04, 2010 2:31 pm

Alright, I have a 9.6v 2200 mah ....16 cell battery. Now, it's 16 cells because there's two packs that have 8. It's a nunchuck pack. How am I suppose to charge it? My charger I have only can charge up to 8 cells. Any ideas?
Thanks.

How to charge a battery Empty
PostSubject: Re: How to charge a battery   How to charge a battery EmptyTue May 04, 2010 7:23 pm

I'm assuming that it is a NiCAD battery. I have never seen a 16 cell 9.6v NiMH.

I would assume that if the carger is rated for the battery type (NiMH, NiCAD, LiPO ect.) and it has a higher voltage rating than the battery you will be charging, than it wouldnt really matter how many cells it has if you are charging it through a deans or tamiya connector.

I am probably wrong since I dont really know.

I dont know. I'v never seen one like that. I dont think the charger will know how many cells there are, so I cant imagine there would be a problem with charging it.

Im assuming you've never charged it before. Check with the place you got it from or call Batteries Plus and ask them.

I'm the second owner because I got it with a gun I bought. Supposedly you charge it as an 8 cell because it's duel and they're linked as one. I'm not sure though...

You charge it the same as an eight cell. Because it is NIMH, I believe you don't have to worry about the cells and such. The voltage is probably lower for each cell and all together you get 9.6v. It's NIMH, so no battery memory either. I would use a smart charger to charge it though.

No, no, no...

If they were to be cut apart they'd both be 9.6 1,100 Mah batteries.

They are wired in series among themselves to get up to 9.6 volts and then wired in parallel together to join the Mah ratings.

(Note: I may have the series/parallel thing switched, I always get them mixed up. The concept is right though)

i thought each single battery adds Voltage, i thought thats why 7 makes 8.4. 8 makes 9.6, 9 makes 10.8 and so on and so on. or do i have that wrong....

PostSubject: Re: How to charge a battery   How to charge a battery EmptyWed May 05, 2010 8:59 pm

I think that is right most of the time. However, I think maybe each individual cell in this instance has a lower voltage and you need more cells overall to achieve the same voltage. So you're sacrificing space for greater amps and maintaining the same voltage.

Or you can put in a 12v like Shar says and blow up your gearbox.

Fireman is correct, when batteries are in series you add the voltage. Then if they are put in parallel you have the same voltage. 9.6V in parallel with 9.6V = 9.6V.

I don't know why I didn't think of this answer before. Makes total sense. Kind of ingenious too. I have selective memory about my physics class. If you want me to explain to you how centrifugal motion doesn't really exist, then I'm your man.

Thats true as long as they are in series.

How to charge a battery Empty
PostSubject: Re: How to charge a battery   How to charge a battery EmptyThu May 06, 2010 12:34 am

Yeah, you can make your own battery packs all day long so long as the chemistry (NiMh or NiCad) and the Mah of each cell is the same. I'll admit, at one point I did at a 3,300 cell to a 4,200 pack to go from 10.8 to 12V and did not see any issues. Can't say when charging that the pack was happy. Later when I got a new 12V pack and compared it to my Frankenstien pack there was a noticable different in ROF. I'm sure that the original 10.8 cell's age combined with the way the thing charged thanks to that odd cell just made it weaker over time.

Best bet, keep the Mah the same. If you have a few 1,100 Mah packs laying around and the space you can easily combine them by cutting off the plug and soldering the red to the red and black to black then re-soldering the lead back in place. The end result will be a 2,200 Mah pack.

Now solder them the other way (each cell positive to negative, positive to negative, positive to negative) and you'll get the higher voltage. In other words, a battery with three cells wired in line like just mentioned will carry a voltage of 3.6V (1.2 per cell). Were you to wire them all positive to positive to positive, negative to negative to negative. You'd have a 1.2 V 3,300 Mah battery (in the case they were 1,100 Mah cells)

Make sense?

There is actually a company online that does a very cost effective custom battery and even lets you choose the type of plugs.

Honestly, I'd not ever run an 11.1 or 12V to a gun that had not been gone over first. You're taking a risk running it in the M60 but the nature of the gun is for ROF so hopefully they did a decent job at shimming and chose a strong set of gears to begin with. This is not the case with most rifles though, even high priced ones like KWA and ARES I'd personally open up just to confirm that things had been shimmed and lubed right and cut that 2nd to last tooth off the piston to make sure I'd never have the early engagement and have the piston bottom out or worse.
